SHOPPING IN GUANGZHOU

Beijing Road

Beijing Road has been one of the major commercial streets in Guangzhou. There are two well-known shopping malls in the street. One is Guangzhou Department Store located on the south side of the street, and the other, Xin-Da-Xin Department Store, on the north side. Both state-owned department stores were built after China embarked on reforms and open-to-the-world policies. In the middle of Beijing Road, large scale bookstores like Xin-hua Bookshop and Education Bookshop can still manage to stay in Beijing Road despite the great commercial impact, but the Foreign Language Bookstore had retreated to the second floor of its original site. Judging from the walls of the bookshops you can imagine the vicissitudes of the city. A great variety of books can be found in these bookshops.

The whole street is lined with chain stores. From fashion to leather products to snack bars...whatever you like can be found here. Differently priced products make it easy to find a bargain. Sometimes you may run into a special sale, especially on weekends or holidays.

The Xihu flea market is also a must for lovers of small trinkets. Here on sale are plenty of toys, ornaments, shirts, and some useful tools that you are not likely to find elsewhere. Also, these small things are very cheap, which is another reason why this street attracts so many visitors. Beijing Road also has convenient transportation. Taxis and buses are still available at midnight

Shangxiajiu pedestrian Street

Clothes, fashion clothes, factory seconds, plenty of shoes and everything you have ever wanted to buy in here and reasonably priced, but where things are cheap, people gather. This shopping street affectionately known as "up down nine street" by the foreign community, is the heart and soul of this city.

I would recommend going there when the dusk sets in, as it's most beautiful in the evenings. The illuminated "Riding Buildings" (Qilou) with stained glass look just fabulous. The covered corridors lining the street and connecting shops on either side reflect a combined heritage of Chinese and Western architecture.

Grandview Mall

The Grandview Mall is an immense new homage to commerce and capitalism, erected in the heart of Tian He, Guangzhou's thriving business district. The mall is brand new (opened in 2005) and is situated very close to the pre-existing Teem Plaza (TeeMall).

Upon its opening, it became the 4th largest shopping mall in the world with total area of 4.5 million square feet.

This mall has several levels with a vast multitude of shops and one large somewhat upscale department store attached.

It features an excellent Brazilian restaurant, as well as the usual suspects, Starbucks, Haagen-Dazs, Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, Watson's, etc. Park n' Shop also has a new location here and there is even a full size ice skating rink! The mall includes several full scale reproductions of classic sculptures, such as the "Winged Victory of Samothrace".

Tee Mall

This mall is huge, used to be the biggest in Asia. All prices here are set prices and you cannot bargain, all of the stores are nice and there are many western brand name stores along with a lot of chiense brand name stores. You can pretty much buy anything here, mens and ladies clothing, jewelery, baby shops and whatever else you need. there is also restaurants inside on the 5th floor and a little mini fair as well.

La Perle is situated in Guangzhou's bustling commercial area, Huan Shi Dong Road, surrounded by notable landmarks such as the Garden Hotel, Bai Yun Hotel, Friendship Store and Guangzhou World Trade Centre. Collectively, these high-end establishments form the largest brand name haven in Guangzhou for the shopping cognoscenti.

Among these prestigious labels, Hermès, Prada, Celine, Hugo Boss,Bulgari, Emporio Armani and D&G have chosen La Perle to make their Guangzhou debut, while Louis Vuitton, Dior, Prada, Ermenegildo Zegna and Givenchy have also unveiled their new concept stores here.

Leading-edge design firm Concept International Design Limited fashioned La Perle into a translucent crystal palace with a strong contemporary artistic flair through liberal use of glass walls. Derived from the French word for "pearl" and symbolizing the mall's position in the heart of the Pearl River Delta, La Perle's overall design concept even finds inspiration from a pearl's innate characteristics including its spherical shape, translucency and lustre.

La Perle is set to become a premiere shopping destination, striving to offer not only an innovative mix of lifestyle, fashion and designer retailers housed for the first time under one roof in Guangzhou, but also international management standards. The mall's service-oriented leadership involves a customer relations management (CRM) department to ensure a close and constant liaison between landlords and retailers; the recruitment of top marketing specialists to monitor La Perle's development and to create a year-long promotional campaign; as well as a newly-established website (www.laperle-global.com) communicating all the latest news on La Perle.
